On my own behalf

First you dance, then you think. It's the natural order.

Samuel Beckett

"All the works shown here are based on analog and digital photographs. Equipment and medium are secondary: the images can be old prints, taken with a low-resolution first-generation camera phone, or high-resolution images from a professional camera. What's more important to me is an idea and the process of contemplative post-processing.

I work primarily with multiple exposures, layering different images or elements into a larger picture, a kind of digital stack of pancakes. The individual images correspond to individual tones that resonate and combine to form the chord of the overall image.
Multiple exposures sacrifice chronological linearity for an instantaneous multi-layeredness. Nothing is simple, everything is complex. This multi-layeredness corresponds to my need for polyphony and a distrust of any form of simplification.

The idea of working with multiple exposures came to me a few years ago. The resulting image was shown at the Salon d'Automne of the Sursock Museum in Beirut. Then I broke everything off and embarked on a new life.
Decisive turning points often occurred within a very short time. Or, as one might say out of laziness or a need for explanation, by chance. The idea that a picture, taken in milliseconds, can change an entire life has always appealed to me. This keeps life open and full of curiosity until the very end.

Taking pictures, reflecting on photography, writing, and teaching have been constants over the years. I work part-time as a German language instructor in Basel and give courses on photography and the history of photography. I consider teaching a privilege: sustainable travel without jet lag and a vital shift in perspective that, in these turbulent, binary times, reveals to me the beauty of the world in all its diversity."
